Ozempic and weight loss: the UK distinction
Ozempic is a diabetes medicine. Its name has become shorthand for weight-loss injections, but the brand, licence and prescribing purpose still matter. Start with what you need treatment for, rather than the name you have heard most often.
What is Ozempic licensed for?
Ozempic contains semaglutide and is licensed for adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. Weight loss can occur during treatment, but Ozempic does not have a UK weight-management indication.
Is it the same as Wegovy?
The brands share semaglutide as an active ingredient, but have different licensed uses and product instructions. Wegovy is a weight-management brand. Sharing an ingredient does not make pens, doses or prescribing plans interchangeable.
Can my GP prescribe it?
A clinician can assess diabetes treatment and decide what is appropriate. Asking for Ozempic for weight loss alone is a different question from treating type 2 diabetes. NHS access also depends on the relevant pathway. This page cannot confirm an individual entitlement or prescription.
What should I know about side effects?
Digestive effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can occur. Persistent severe abdominal pain needs urgent medical assessment; sudden loss of vision or rapidly worsening eyesight also needs urgent help. Discuss other medicines and any planned anaesthetic with your clinical team. Do not stop or adjust diabetes treatment because of a comparison page.
What if I already take it?
Keep following your own prescription. If you are concerned about weight, side effects, supply or whether treatment is working, take those questions to the clinician managing it. Record the product name, prescribed dose, dates and problem before making contact. Avoid sharing unnecessary medical details in public comments or general website enquiries.
What should I ask if weight management is my main aim?
- Which licensed options fit my health history, rather than just my BMI?
- Who is responsible for prescribing and ongoing review?
- What is included in the full cost and what happens if I need to stop?
- Where can I get practical food and movement support during and after treatment?
Your next useful step
If you are exploring options, use the treatment comparison as preparation for a clinical conversation. If you are already being treated, My Timber can support ordinary routines and check-ins without asking you to change provider. It does not replace your diabetes team or prescriber.
