Motivation Is Overrated: Build a Routine

Motivation can get you started. A useful routine gives you something to do on the day you do not feel particularly motivated. Keep it flexible enough to survive ordinary life.

Connect the action to an event

Choose a cue that already happens: after lunch, when you put the kettle on or when you get home. Attach one small action to it. For example, prepare tomorrow's lunch after dinner or put walking shoes by the door before bed. Pick something that fits your circumstances; these are examples, not rules.

Give the routine a smaller version

Decide in advance what counts on a difficult day. A shorter suitable walk, a simpler dinner or recording a brief check-in may keep the thread. The smaller version should still serve the goal. It is not a way to force activity through illness, injury or exhaustion.

Review the arrangement, not your character

  • If you forgot, change the reminder or put the equipment somewhere useful.
  • If it took too long, shorten the action or choose a different time.
  • If you disliked it, try a genuinely different option rather than the same plan with a new slogan.
  • If other people keep interrupting the time, discuss the arrangement with them.
  • If it helped, keep it long enough to learn whether it fits most weeks.

Restart without a punishment lap

Missing a day gives you information about the plan. It does not require twice the exercise or less food tomorrow. Return at the next suitable opportunity and adjust what got in the way. My Timber lets you record a next step and whether it helped; keep the feedback honest so the next choice is based on your week rather than an imagined perfect one.

MAKE IT PART OF THE DAY

Put the principle into My Timber.

The useful bit is what happens next: a remembered check-in, food that fits, one movement session and a plan that can change when life does.
